Bremen off Tilbury

Bremen off Tilbury by John Wood

A beautifully proportioned ship, and an interesting footnote to history.

Originally owned by the German line NDL BREMEN was awarded to Britain as part of German reparations
following the First World War, and assigned to the P&O Line.

For several years she was used on the Australian migrant service and is seen moving berths off Tilbury.

Interestingly P&O did not change her name.

Within a few years a resurgent Germany would launch the most famous BREMEN of all, another NDL liner of immense power,
quite in contrast to the sedate elegance seen here.

Oil on canvas 20" x 30" Commissioned 1991
